Reshaping of side continues

'Caretaker' boss Phil Parkinson has continued to reshape the side. The E mail bulletin reports: 'Phil Parkinson was delighted to land striker Deon Burton this afternoon. He told the official website: "There's no fee involved for Deon and he's a player I've admired for a long time. What concerned me slightly is that if Andy Gray got injured, we lacked a hold-up player and I was struggling to find two strikers who complemented each other."' [I think one of the problems with Gray is that he is not much of a hold up player].

'But with Deon here, it gives me the option to replace Andy and they also have the ability to play together. [A possible hint for Saturday?] All over the football pitch, you need partnerships and it's important you get the right balance in all areas.'

'Today's second loan capture of Jay McEveley from Derby County has pleased Phil Parkinson, with the caretaker boss explaining why Luke Varney has moved in the opposite direction.'

'"I'm delighted to bring Jay in," said the caretaker boss. "Despite his young age, he has got a lot of experience, both in the Premier League and the Championship. He's a big, strong, athletic full-back, who will give us much-needed consistency in that area.'

'"I felt Luke needed a change of scenery to kickstart his career and it was a chance for the club to recoup a large chunk of the transfer fee paid out for him."'

I don't think it has worked out for Varney at Charlton, his strike rate has been very poor and there was another miss for close range at Loftus Road on Tuesday with the ball being sent into the stands from about eight yards.

A Sheffield Wed fan I work with told me that if we are signing Burton we must be in big trouble. He is absolutely not rated at Hillsborough. Varney's loan deal sounds like a prospective transfer. I'm saddened by the news, not because I think we'll miss him over the next few games, but because it further darkens my view of the Pardew era. In a sense, all we had left to hope for was that a new manager would be able to organise and motivate the (hopefully) talented group of young players Pardew had brought to the club. The departure of the hard working and likeable Varney is further clear evidence that Pards really messed up and that this hope is forlorn. We are in big trouble.

Varney may have been likeable and hard working, but he was simply not effective in scoring goals which was his job. I have no view one way or the other about Burton, but I wouldn't be that influenced by what a Wednesday fan says because often players improve when they switch clubs. And we are in big trouble.

Luke Varney is a legend verging on the Leaburnesque. Everyone seems to love him but his misses were spectacular - Burnley, QPR and of course Ipswich, where his 3 touch miss was featured as a total embarrassment by Helen and the crew at Soccer AM.

We've still got some talented youngsters to work with but I guess Parky's job is to start to get us out of the mess before he or someone else gets the job full time. Whilst not a fan of loan players - and certainly not by the shipload - at least the loanees seem more committed this year. Like you Wyn, no idea about Burton, or McEvely for that matter, but Gillespie and Waghorn seem up for it.

And don't the Pompey boys technically go back in December - or have I got that wrong?

I wish our managers would go on the various fan forums before they sign players . The view from Sheff Weds is that Burton is a good player , doesn't score as many as he should ( but unlike Varney , he does score some !) and he fell out a bit with Brian Laws, perhaps he got to the sandwiches first.
However , the Derby view on McEvely is that he is completely hopeless , the worst left back they ever had , worth two goals to the opposition ,will confirm Charlton's relegation etc , etc.
Unfortunately in the choice between whose opinions I value most , their fans or any football management team ( particularly ours) , I go for the fans , don't you ????
Is it possible to have a worse defensive full back than Youga, gosh how bad can he be !!

How can a club so much in debt sign 7 loan players knowing that only 5 can be used on match day?It is like Woolies taking on 30% more staff than they need.We are doomed with people running our club like this.We need to find out who makes these desicions and sack them before it is too late.Has Simon Jorden joined the club?

As a charlton fan living in Sheffiled I see quite a lot of Burton.I rate him.Hard working player who makes a lot of goals for others. He could be a good addition.
