Deal nearly done

After some of the most desperate days in the club's history, reports are circulating widely that the deal for the club to be taken over by Zabeel Investments is nearly complete. It may be finished in time for Saturday's match against Burnley, allowing fans to celebrate the news before seeing the club slump to another home defeat. But now there is light at the end of the tunnel - and it is not an oncoming train.

Thw takeover of Charlton by Dubai based Zabeel Investments is being conducted in Kent at the offices of the club's solicitors Vertex Law at Kings Hill near Maidstone, who sponsored last night's match.

A team of lawyers and accountants representing Zabeel and chief executive Mohammed Al Hashimi have descended on Kings Hill for the process of due diligence.

There are persistent rumours that Dennis Wise may have some sort of role at The Valley, but these have received no independent confirmation. It may be that Peter Varney will return in some kind of role, a development which would be warmly welcomed by most of the Addickted.

Wyn I've been checking the blogs every few hours for this sort of news since the announcement. I have crossed every thing in the house. This is nothing new for my missus who is always cross.

Your positive piece has cheered me up tonight - until the name Dennis Wise appeared , that is !

If Richard Murray is still involved with the Club , I can't believe that DW will be allowed on board....

I actually ran into Peter Varney at the Services en route to Cardiff. He looked very well , said he attends virtually all matches, home & away and that he has been doing lots of decorating at home. No mention of further employment yet so fingers crossed for the return of the prodigal son !

Wyn, I hope you're right but the story below is taken from Thursday's Daily Mail (not that one should believe everything in it of course).

"Zabeel shun Charlton Zabeel Investments, owned by the Dubai royal family, are understood to have withdrawn their £20million offer to buy Championship club Charlton, which was at the due diligence stage.

The consortium, who had previously looked at Newcastle, may now turn their attention to Everton, although Fulham and West Ham are other possibilities."

The Sun and the Mail can run what stories they like. However, I think they are confusing different branches of the Dubai royal family. It is possible that Dubai Investment Corporation may make an offer for Everton, but that is a different matter. As far as I know, the deal is still on track.

Peter Varney will surely be the next chief exec of the FA. I doubt he's waiting around to return to Charlton.
