Charlton go third after double over Cardiff

Charlton took 3rd position in the Championship tonight after their 2-0 away victory over Cardiff City. The Addicks are one point behind the Baggies after they lost 2-4 at home to Coventry City, but Watford won 3-2 at Layer Road with Kevin Lisbie missing a sitter.

Charlton took a first half lead in their match against the Bluebirds at Ninian Park. Away from The Valley, the Addicks were able to focus on their football, although the strong wind afflicting the Welsh capital did not produce a flowing game.

Nevertheless, Charlton brightly and forced a free kick on the left. Sodje's header from the free kick was not far away. Andy Reid had a half chance but put his shot wide.

Somewhat unusually, Charlton scored from a corner on the right. The corner was well taken and the ball was assisted into a central position by W Wind, allowing Matt Holland to score on 34 minutes.

Half time: Bluebirds 0, Addicks 1

In the second half charm merchant Darren Purse pulled down Ambrose in the box, allowing Andy Reid to put the Addicks 2-0 ahead on 79 minutes from the penalty spot. Away from the nervy crowd at The Valley, Charlton were able to coast to a double over Cardiff.

Elsewhere, Chris Dickson scored two, one from the penalty spot, as Gillingham won 3-2 at Crewe.

Well there's a surprise - scoring from a corner - and by Matty in the "Graham Stuart" position from the sounds of it. I think that is the first time in about 18 months in the league.

Let's hope they do simalar work on the free kicks and throw-ins!

Wyn - you are a wise and well versed in the wacky world of football. What is going on? Are we that effected by our home crowd?

But its not just us either - two of the Ws lost games tonight I'd expect them to get something from.

Please expound your theory

I don't have a theory, more a rather tentative hypothesis. And it actually goes against the grain of my thinking as I think that the effect of crowds (positive or negative) on matches is often exaggerated. However, although expectations are not at Newcastle or Spurs levels, the crowd does get nervy and gets on the team's back very quickly.

I still don't think Pardew knows his best home team, 4-5-1 works well for us and other teams away from home as can be seen from some of the away scores last night. He has seemed to have made some knee jerk decisions as at the last home game. I would still like to see Reid in the middle just behind Iwelumo. Any ideas why he hasn't played Macon and Semedo?

What has surprised me is Pards pre-match admission that we are unable to match physically many of the teams in this league, and therefore results are based on work rate and skill. He also goes on to say that we can't play our way out of the division. Occasionally there will be the need to grind out a result and therefore the acquision of a couple of 'bruisers' in January wouldn't go a miss.
