Charlton to be first African owned club?
Charlton could become the first African owned top flight club. However, there are a number of sticking points over the deal with a Nigerian businessman, and it could be that a rival Russian consortium will succeed. In any event a deal could be done within weeks: Takeover

didn't we have some dealings with some african prince in the 70's? I suspect that any deal will take longer than a few weeks and these two consortiums may just be the staling horses.
Chief Nzeribe, but it was early 1980s. I think he was an arms dealer. He certainly was awol from The Valley as the crisis deepend.
Personally if this happened it would make me seriously question whether I could go on supporting Charlton. And i've been going for 26 years). I fell in love with Jocks training ground, the fact that no glory hunters (plastics) supported Charlton, they stuck with Spurs Arsenal and West Ham at the time. I fell in love with the grass roots feel that Charlton always had. (plucky Charlton).I don't care whether it's rich Africans, Americans or Russians, I simply do not want to become another Man City, West Ham or Chelski.
I think that its very easy to start shouting from the rafters that we do not want to sell out to some foreign businessman, and I would certainly be in the queue to do just that. However it is painfully clear that if we are to compete at the top level we do need fresh investment. Its a difficult decision the board has to make and so long the integrity of the possible future owner is in keeping with little old Charlton then it may be just what we need.
i feel that the person above(mr anonymous)is a hippocrite, if the club is kept on the same safe footing that makes it look good to overseas investors,what is the problem? a cash injection for pards is good! and after the best part of 15 years of inactivity on the footballing front by the board, when they did have to make serious decissions last season they fluffed it big time. as for mr anonymous not supporting the club if they get taken over, he just shows what a plastic he is.

Mr Anonymous number 2, selling out to foreign ownership is the death knell of our great club. You can try supporting them through thick and thin, but if there's no team any more you won't be able to. This depresses me more than relegation last season.
It would be nice if Mr and Mrs Anonymous were a little clearer about their identity.
Mr Anonymous 1 may have to make the choice between accepting the money and supporting a Prem. Club or not accepting and supporting initially a yo yo club and then an anonymous club like QPR. Of course, the decision will not be his but Murrays.
Mrs Anonymous 2 is living in a different Charlton land than I if he thinks the only big decisions Boards make at their clubs is about appointing managers, who redeveloped the ground and returned the club to the valley, who released the money for Mendonca, Curbs implemented decisions that the board enabled him to make. yes they fluffed last year, as Leicester did when O'Neil left and Bolton look like with Allardyces departure, but they are still in credit as far as I am concerened.
With over half the premier league in foreign ownership already, the writing is on the wall. Once Sky realise their product is totally devalued, the big football money days will be over. This will leave clubs with huge wage bills, huge debts, and the prospect of going to the wall. Look at what's happened to Leeds. I fear this will be the fate of many more clubs over the next few years. Meanwhile, England will continue to struggle as a footballing nation - see David Moyes comments with regard to this.
The Independent clearly haven't heard of Fulham and Mohammed Al Fayed, the club owned by the Egyptian...
